Priscilla Hauser
Decorative Painting
With “I can teach you to paint” as her motto, First Lady of
Decorative Painting Priscilla Hauser has inspired
thousands of decorative painters since taking her
first tole painting class in the early 1960s.
In the beginning Priscilla’s
path was headed towards a dentist office rather than
a painting studio. “Mother and dad wouldn’t pay for
art school, so that’s how I wound up in dental
hygiene,” she admits. However, after school her
interest in art prevailed as her passion, and she
decided to learn how to paint. Her first painting
was on a salt shaker. Soon her neighbors saw her
work, and encouraged her to begin teaching classes
in her garage, and that is how Priscilla began her
career as a teacher.
Her garage was soon to
small for the number of students she was teaching,
and that’s when Priscilla opened “Priscilla’s Little
Red Tole House.” She began to spread her love of
decorative painting to hundreds of eager students.
During this time decorative painting had caught
on, and in 1972 Priscilla gathered 21 people in
Tulsa, OK and founded the National Society of Tole
and Decorative Painting (now known as the Society of
Decorative Painting or SDP).
Priscilla is a world renowned
teacher, author, and decorative painter. She has
published many best selling books with Plaid, and is
currently as spokeswoman for FolkArt Acrylic Colors.
Her emphasis on the basics of painting has inspired
students across the world. She has taught in Canada,
Japan, Argentina, and all over the world. Priscilla recently opened a new "Little Red Tole House" in Tulsa, and plans to teach there for years to come.
